Mount Usu Volcano

Mt.Usu very near Toya Japan last erupted in March of 2000. These pictures are of the active vent located on the western flank of the mountain.

  • This was shot on the flank of the active vent looking towards the place where I exited the taxis.

  • To the North is the little town where a small Vulcanotourism industry is now resident. Mt, Yotie smaokes in the background
  • The Crows don't seem to mind the vent. This one is perched on a toasted tree just outside the active vent.
  • Since I can't read Japanese I didn't understand the warning signs to stay within the roped area, so I ventured close the the Vent's rim. I was the cause for shock and concern by the many tourists who were in the allowed viewing area watching me. I did not venture too close as I do know what the temperature of that steam. Sulfurous emmissions were low and the wind was blowing away from the direction I approached.
